Can I have horses?

  • You must be zoned A-1 (Agricultural) or R-1 (Rural Residential) with a minimum of five (5) acres to be allowed to have a horse.  You may have have one (1) livestock or farm animal for every one and a half (1.5) acres. 
Can I have chickens? 

  • On parcels 35 acres or more yes. 
  • For parcels 5-35 acres and zoned A-1 (Agricultural) or R-1 (Rural Residential) you may have five (5) poultry for each one and a half (1.5) acres. 
  • For parcels under 5 acres you would need a conditional use permit. Contact the zoning administrator with questions. 
How many dogs can I have? 
 
The Town of Addison allows four (4) household adult pets. Household pets shall include domestic dogs, cats, rabbits, and other small animals.
Do I need a permit to install a fence?

No you do not.  A fence may be installed right up to the lot line in the side and rear yards in residential districts.  The fence may not be more than six feet in height and the "finished side" shall face the neighboring property.

What do I need to know if I want to build an accessory structure? (shed, garage, carport, gazebo)

  • Must be in the side or rear yard
  • Only 2 accessory structures are allowed 
  • Must be 10 feet away from all lot lines or any other structures
  • Accessory building for motor vehicles shall have a concrete floor
  • Principal structure must be present prior to building an accessory structure
  • Size Limitations:
    • Parcels five (5) acres or less shall not exceed a combined total of 864 sq ft and a height of 15 ft
    • Parcels greater than five (5) acres shall not exceed a combined total of 1,500 sq ft and a height of 20 ft
    • A conditional use permit may be applied for to exceed these size limitations.  Contact the Zoning Administrator.
